KEY TO THE BURUNDIAN DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRESS LIES IN ITS YOUTH BUT ARE THE YOUTH UP FOR THE TASK?

Since time immemorial, the future of every country is guaranteed by its youth. it is imperative to train and equip the youth with important skill-set. in the recent memory, the countries that emerged out of poverty, achieved such milestone through intensive development of their youth. in the late 1960s, most Asian countries like China, Vietnam, South Korea lived under extreme poverty, however since then, they have made incredible strides. They achieved such milestone, due to their investment in training and educating their youth. As of 2026, those Asian countries are world leading in almost all industries including strategic ones. Burundi can follow in the footstep of those Asian countries. Burundi has a huge youth percentage of its population.  By equipping them with skills, they can contribute to the development and progress of the Burundian economy. The youth is tomorrow's Burundi( Abana nibo Burundi bw'ejo).

Compare to their fellow youth in the region, Burundian young population is still left behind in terms of their contribution towards the economy. In countries like Kenya, Uganda and even Rwanda, the local authorities have understood the importance of their young population. There is a huge investment in education through vocational training as well as funding for R&D in critical sectors in universities. Burundian youth are competing at a disadvantage as they are not equipped with the same resources. Therefore, in order to acquire competitive know-how or knowledge in non existent sectors in Burundi, most people decide to leave the country and acquire the knowledge else.

For Burundi to move out its current position, its youth to make a huge uplifting. the country needs its creative minds to innovate and create startups to catch up to its neighbours in  East Africa community (EAC). With the GDP of approximately $6billion, Burundi does not enough financial resources to compete regionally. the country has to allocate its miniscule financial resources in education and training of its youth especially in sector that can earn the country foreign currency. some of the sectors include mining, Agriculture, tourism and others. Burundi has a favourable climate for farming as well as a rich underground where most of the current critical minerals needed for today's technologies semi conductors, electricals and others. The involvement of the youth in those sectors will immensely change the Burundian future fortune for the better.

Like other countries, Burundian youth cannot be left behind in embracing new technologies and other new ways of doing. competent young population can transform the country in short period of time. Burundian youth are hungry and driven for success and it is possible for them to improve the country of their ancestors.
